Training for Older Dogs

Training for older dogs Montgomery County, MD

Training for your older dog in your home

Do you have an adult or senior dog who needs a dog training tune-up?

A lot of people have older dogs that have not been trained well from the beginning, or have not had their training reinforced over the years.

It may seem your older dog has forgotten how to behave. Some older dogs will begin barking more, become more aggressive, or try your patience with disruptive or dangerous behaviors.

As dogs get older, their natural instincts, tendencies, and untrained behaviors often show up or get stronger. Some older dogs can actually become more disobedient with age. That’s frustrating but normal.

You can do a lot to improve your old friend's unwanted behavior with training that's tailored to your older dog.

Give the gift that lasts a lifetime - dog training for your furry friend. Great for your special furry friend or loved one’s furry friend.

Yes, You CAN Teach an Old Dog

I’m here to dispel the myth that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. You absolutely can teach older dogs! I help people with older dogs to retrain basic commands, address house training concerns, and correct unwanted behaviors.

Dog training for older dogs can be just as much fun and rewarding as working with a young dog.

Training older dogs is something I enjoy, and I’m happy to work with you and your older dog.

An Experienced Trainer for Older Dogs

Not every dog gets adopted as a puppy. Many people take in older dogs, or rescue stray or abandoned dogs. You have special challenges trying to train an older dog.

Often they are bigger, stronger and more intimidating than a puppy.

One of my specialties is working with the challenges of training older dogs. We’ll address the different challenges you have when training an older dog that you don’t have with a puppy.

This is Tommy, who was adopted as a stray. At first his behavior was difficult to manage. Now with some training, he's calm and eager to show what he's learned. Tommy and his owner are both much happier!

Tommy is an adult dog who was adopted after he was found wandering in the streets.

At first, Tommy was aggressive, uncooperative and hard to control. His owner wanted to keep him, but started to worry if adopting him was a good idea. But after we worked together for a few sessions, Tommy became a wonderful dog.

As you can see in this picture, Tommy is happy, cooperative and a great companion.

Working With Me and Your Older Dog

Our first step is a phone call to discuss your dog training needs. In our phone consultation, we'll go over your personal situation. When seeking training for an older dog, you may have unique questions, such as:

  • How to train an older dog basic commands
  • How to train an older dog to listen and stop ignoring you
  • How to work with an older rescue dog or stray
  • How to potty train an older dog
  • How to do obedience training with an older dog

If your dog is unlearning some behaviors or challenging you with new ones, it may be time for a dog training tune-up.

I work with any breed, any size and any age dog, to help everyone go back to enjoying the great companion you know your dog can be.
